Introduction to Western Herbal Medicine

18-09-2007
When you first consult me I will take your whole case history. You will be asked questions relating to the body systems to find out how they are functioning.

My aim is to find out the root cause of the symptoms you might be suffering.

Many people suffer from symptoms which don’t seem to be connected. For example there might be depression, mood swings, PMT, constipation alternating with diarrhoea, mouth ulcers and sugar craving.

Very often all these symptoms can be traced back to one root: in this case to Candida albicans. Candida is a fungus which sparsely populates the intestinal tract. In sensitive people it can grow and spread out of proportion and lead to candidiasis.
A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates encourages the growth of the fungus. Why does candida also affect our mental state and our moods? Candida is a living being which feeds and then releases waste products. These waste products are toxic and end up in our blood stream.

All the blood flows through the whole body, i.e. also through the brain. Once in the brain these toxic substances make us feel depressed, anxious and tired.

Herbal medicine can offer many herbs to clear the body from harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. They support the detox process and strengthen the body’s organs and systems.

One of the fundamental systems is the immune system, a very complex and sophisticated structure. A strong immune system is the basis of good health.

A variety of herbs and natural remedies like propolis, a bee product, strengthen our immune system and prevent bacterial, viral and fungal infections and inflammations. The most well known herb to stimulate the immune system is Echinacea.

Apart from prescribing herbs, I will also give you dietary advice. I will check your pulse and blood pressure, check your weight and height and, if necessary assess the function of your lungs with a peak flow meter.

I will look at your tongue which can give clues to the state of your digestive system. Your entire medical history will be listed including any medication or supplements you might be taking including its dosage.

My aim of using herbal remedies is to restore your health.

Herbal medicine can be used for a whole range of conditions, such as skin problems, M.E., high blood pressure, rheumatic and digestive disorders, depression, anxiety, asthma, menstrual problems and much more.

It can also help with conditions you might not think to consult your doctor over, such as poor circulation, indigestion, insomnia, hormonal imbalances or common colds and ‘flu'.

Herbal treatment can be used as an alternative to your doctors’ medication or run alongside them. It is suitable for all from babies to great grandparents.

Certain herbs are not suitable for women during pregnancy. Other herbs are excellent to take during pregnancy and to facilitate birth, or to help with infertility problems.
