Coronavirus - a herbalist’s view

05-03-2020
This new virus, that seems to originate from bats, can affect our airways and lungs. It can lead to a cough, a high temperature and shortness of breath.

The big questions are: why do some people get infected by this virus and experience no symptoms? Why do others fall ill once they become infected?

And, why do some people sadly die as a result of this viral infection?

What is different in these different outcomes? Is it old age, other present diseases, stress and/or weak immune system?
It might be one of these factors or a combination of them, of course.

Most interesting and relevant to me, is this important fact:

Which is that we all have our own human anti-viral defence inbuilt in us.

We produce our own natural anti-viral proteins called interferons. They are well researched signalling proteins.

Would we survive a viral infection without interferon?

It is Important to note that viruses work in a different manner compared to bacteria. In order to multiply, the virus needs our human cell DNA to proliferate.

Once a virus has managed to enter our cells and begins multiplying using our DNA, the cell membrane secretes interferon proteins.

If this works efficiently enough, these interferons inhibit viral replication in the neighbouring healthy and uninfected cells.

Working like an early warning system, the purpose of the different kinds of interferons is to ‘wall off’ or to limit the viral spread and to protect us.

The good news is that there are natural remedies that stimulate the production and secretion of interferons in the human body.

Two of the main remedies include Echinacea and the bee product propolis.

Two international conferences, one in Glasgow in 2016, and one in Sofia in Bulgaria in 2018 demonstrated how much research was being done all over the world to examine for example how and why propolis works to support human health to protect us from viral and bacterial infections.

Following a healthy lifestyle is of paramount importance for our immune system's protective process to work well and fast.

And in all cases, following basic hygiene measurements helps to prevent an infection in the first place. Which should be remembered first and foremost at this time.
