Valerian
(Valeriana officinalis)
Valerian is well known as a herb for nervous conditions.

It may safely be used to reduce tension and anxiety, over-excitability and hysterical states.

Its sedative properties only work when the body has the urge to sleep, i.e. it does not cause drowsiness and it does not impair co-ordination as many sedative or tranquillising drugs do.

As an anti-spasmodic it will relieve cramp, intestinal colic and period pains.
It is specific to relieve pain which is associated with tension.

Valerian is not confined to the central nervous system, it acts directly on the smooth muscle cells in the digestive tract reducing tension and spasms.

It also acts to relieve spasms in the bronchi thus helping to relieve asthma attacks.
